Skin elasticity is your skin's ability to stretch and return to its original form without permanently changing shape or tearing.
But, what actually is skin elasticity, and why is it important?
A protein called elastin is found in the dermal layer of your skin along with collagen. This gives skin its stretchy skills. Elastic and collagen play an essential role in the healing process of skin - including scrapes and scars - as well as your skin's appearance and health.
Both of these proteins keep your skin firm and smooth, which is why a decrease in collagen and elastin production leads to ageing like fine lines and wrinkles, sagging and skin thinning.
Collagen and elastin production naturally slow down with age. This gradual decline leads to reduced skin thickness, fine lines, and wrinkles. The process typically begins around the age of 25 and progresses over time.
Your skincare routine significantly impacts skin elasticity. Proper skincare can enhance elasticity, while neglect or poor practices can diminish it. Notably, leaving makeup on overnight is particularly detrimental, clogging pores and disrupting collagen production. It's essential to cleanse your face regularly but avoid excessive washing, which can strip natural oils and lead to dehydration and increased wrinkles.
Sun exposure accelerates the breakdown of elastin, contributing to premature ageing. Smoking releases free radicals that also harm skin elasticity. Diet plays a role as well; inadequate nutrients hinder collagen production, while diets high in sugar and refined carbs can damage collagen molecules. Dehydration and lack of exercise further exacerbate the loss of skin elasticity.
