What is Skin Pigmentation?
Pigmentation refers to the darkening of the skin caused by an excess production of pigment by melanocytes, which are cells responsible for skin coloration. This process occurs as a protective response to factors such as trauma, hormones, and environmental exposures like UV radiation.
Main Causes of Skin Pigmentation
UV Radiation
Excessive sun exposure, especially in regions with high UV radiation levels like Australia, can lead to conditions such as age spots or sun spots due to the sun's harmful UV rays.
Hormonal Factors
Hormonal changes during pregnancy, contraceptive use (the pill), or other hormonal influences can cause conditions like melasma or chloasma. These lead to patches of darkened skin that may require professional treatment.
Skin Trauma
